Who We Are
The Detroit Area Agency on Aging (DAAA) is a private, non-profit agency founded in 1980 as a senior planning, funding and advocacy agency. Located in downtown Detroit, we make a variety of eldercare services available to older adults and their families through public and private funding.
As one of sixteen Area Agencies on Aging in Michigan, DAAA plans, coordinates and develops services for the elderly, provides some direct services, and funds and monitors nearly 40 community agencies which provide most of the direct eldercare services in our area.
DAAA services an area consisting of almost 150,000 older adults residing in Detroit, Grosse Pointe, Grosse Pointe Farms, Grosse Pointe Park, Grosse Pointe Shores, Grosse Pointe Woods, Hamtramck, Harper Woods and Highland Park.
HMOW Program Background
Through the Detroit Area Agency on Aging Home Delivered Meals program, a federal and state funded program, meals are delivered to seniors five days a week. Unfortunately, there are no public funds to feed our seniors during weekends and holidays. It was because of the desperate need to expand the existing program that the Detroit Area Agency on Aging, in 1988, created the Detroit Meals on Wheels - Holiday Meals on Wheels program (HMOW). HMOW is primarily supported through private and community funds. Currently, the Holiday Meals on Wheels program provides hot nutritious meals on Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, and Labor Day. Weekend meals and breakfast boxes are also delivered when funds permit.
Who Will Receive the Meals?
Homebound seniors who would otherwise not receive a meal on a holiday or weekend will receive these meals. These individuals are:
• The homebound 60+: Seniors who want to maintain their independence.
• The lonely and isolated: Two out of three seniors live alone.
• The poor: Over 90% of seniors have incomes less than $5,000 a year.
• The very old: Many seniors are 75, 85, 95, and older.
Our primary goal is to create a greater awareness of the program, thus, generating additional funds to expand the Holiday Meals program. The Holiday Meals on Wheels program believes that “Hunger Takes No Holiday.” Therefore, we must continue the fight against hunger among our homebound seniors.
The Detroit Area Agency on Aging will lead the Aging Network into the new millennium. The DAAA is committed to providing services to the more than 150,000 older adults in our area.
Our vision is simply to maintain and increase services to the homebound elderly residing in our planning and service area. We envision community support of Detroit Meals on Wheels becoming a corporate and household tradition.
The Agency is committed to keeping the community aware of the needs of our seniors and providing services that make a difference in the quality of life for our seniors. Our goal is to increase the number of meals delivered by expanding the program to seven days per week. Currently our seniors receive one meal daily, Monday - Friday, with the exception of some holidays. Our seniors, like us, need and should have meals seven days a week.
The Detroit Area Agency on Aging’s mission is to assist older persons in maximizing their personal independence and dignity through the removal of social, economic, physical and psychological barriers with a special emphasis on older persons who are frail, low income and/or minority.
