Statement from Paul Bridgewater, President & CEO, Detroit Area Agency on Aging, on the death of Sam Logan, Publisher, Michigan Chronicle.
In a conversation with Sam Logan one week ago, he said he does not use the words senior citizen. “I classify myself as an O-P-A-L,” he said. “OPAL – Older People with Active Lifestyles.”
Sam Logan was a good friend of the Detroit Area Agency on Aging. He offered us a weekly column in the Michigan Chronicle when he realized that our community needed to better understand aging issues and the services of our agency. We worked hard to explain Medicare and Medicaid to Chronicle readers, and even today, the future of Social Security and Medicare are on the front burner of discussions across the country. Sam Logan always said to his staff, “We are not in the newspaper business. We are in the business of communication.”
On Wednesday, December 21, we recorded an interview with Sam Logan for the December 31 edition of our weekly radio show, The Senior Solution (the interview will air at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, December 31, on WCHB 1200 AM and 99.9 FM). We invited Sam to look back at 2011 and the deaths of several notable Detroiters, each active in the civil rights arena. We wanted Sam to talk about how a community like ours can capitalize on the wisdom and legacy of its leaders. Additionally, we wondered what younger generations would know about these luminaries.
“For some reason or another,” Sam said, “young people are not like the young people when I came along years ago. And as I tell others all the time, it is not the answer that enlightens, but the question. We don’t get enough of our younger people to ask enough questions (to grasp) the wisdom and legacy that we have…and a lot of that stuff is going to our graves.”
I wondered if Sam had a wish for the city of Detroit in 2012, and he replied: “Right now, I’m having sleepless nights. I’m praying that the community, the (Detroit City) Council, the Mayor, and the union movement will sit down and communicate and figure out their resolve for the city I love.
“Because there are so many ramifications if certain things happen, like (financial) managers, or Chapter 9—which is bankruptcy; it would be devastating. And on top of that, it would create…perceptions. You hear: ‘Well, you took over our schools; you took our zoo, you took Cobo Hall,’ and some are saying ‘you’ve taken our water,’ which is not true. Then you say, ‘Now you’re taking our city!’
“Does anybody understand the ramification there? Perception vs. reality? And usually, what most people perceive, that’s what he or she believes. It’s frightening.”
Fortunately, there were no misperceptions when it came to Sam Logan. He stood solidly for all that he believed, and we’re grateful for his contributions to the Black press with the stellar weekly newspaper, the Michigan Chronicle. Sam Logan may have called himself an OPAL, but he was a Diamond.

Holiday Meals on Wheels Program to feed thousands of homebound seniors on Thanksgiving and Christmas with support from Ford Motor Company Fund and DTE Energy
For the fourth year, Ford Motor Company Fund and Community Services provided support for Detroit Area Agency on Aging's Holiday Meals on Wheels Program with a $20,000 grant. Hundreds of volunteers along with Ford employees and family members packed and delivered freshly-prepared hot nutritious Thanksgiving meals to over 5,500 homebound seniors in DAAA's service area of Detroit, Highland Park, Hamtramck, Harper Woods and the five Grosse Pointes.
This Christmas, with $25,000 in support from DTE Energy, over 5,500 additional holiday meals will be delivered to help seniors experience the joy of having a good freshly-prepared nutritious meal on the holiday. Hundreds of DTE employees will help support DAAA's Holiday Meals on Wheels Program now in its 23rd year. This is the second year that DTE Energy is supporting Holiday Meals on Wheels. In 2010, more than 700 DTE Energy employees and families volunteered to prepare and deliver hot meals to nearly 6,000 seniors in DAAA's service area in metro Detroit. This year, DTE Energy expanded to partner with DAAA and four other Area Agencies on Aging that will provide thousands more seniors with hot Christmas holiday meals throughout southeastern Michigan. Again, DTE Energy employees and hundreds of other volunteers are volunteering to pack, deliver and service holiday meals in an area that extends from St Clair County to Monroe and Washtenaw counties and in the Grand Rapids and Muskegon areas. These holiday meals are made possible by a grass roots campaign that raises private contributions. Hundreds of DAAA staff, families, retirees, students, service providers, businesses, churches, sororities and fraternities sell holiday greeting cards for $5.00 each and for every card sold or donation contributed, a needy senior is fed. To support Holiday Meals on Wheels for Christmas, as a volunteer or with a contribution, please contact DAAA at (313) 446-4444.
