Nutrition Services

Nutrition is Important

Research shows that less than a third of seniors eat properly. At the same time, research indicates that a nutritious diet and daily exercise can lengthen and improve our quality of life (see the Senior Food Guide Pyramid)

Detroit Meals on Wheels

The nutrition service for seniors for more than 25 years, Detroit Meals on Wheels is committed to making sure that seniors are able to maintain their independence and live healthy, happy lives. The program serves more than 11,000 seniors 60 years or older who live in Detroit, Hamtramck, Harper Woods, Highland Park, Grosse Pointe Farms, Grosse Pointe Shores and Grosse Pointe Woods.

Home Delivered Meals

Meals are delivered to homebound seniors five days a week by polite Detroit Meals on Wheels staff members who are dedicated to improving seniors’ health and well-being.

Congregate Meals

Seniors are encouraged t eat a nutritional meal in a social setting, like churches and recreation centers, where they enjoy a delicious hot meal, while making new friends and participating in activities with their peers. Most sites are open Monday through Thursday. Some are open on Fridays. No reservation is required, however, meals are served on a first come basis.
